If you like a bit of bling, then gilded food will be totally your thing. Not content with gold flakes on bagels and gold-foiled potatoes with steak, now curious diners can try 24-karat gold chicken wings. Ridiculous? Maybe, but customers are queuing up to try them.
The Ainsworth, with branches in New York, New Jersey, Kansas City, and Nashville, collaborated with television personality, Jonathan Cheban, also known as the FoodGod, to come up with this gilded specialty. The Ainsworth is a sports bar, but it's known for its high caliber food offerings, and they've upped the stakes with these gold chicken wings.
They are made by generously sprinkling chicken in gold dust, then brining them for a full 24 hours. After this, they are cooked in a gold coconut butter honey-chipotle sauce. At the Ainsworth, you get a side serving of blue cheese with them. Reviews have called them delicious, explaining that the sweet barbecue flavor is the first taste, with the chipotle coming through as you eat more of them.
Unsurprisingly, these wings don't come cheap. Starting at $45 for a basket of 10, and 50 pieces for $1,000, it seems that they might be reserved for celebrity fodder, but if you feel like splashing out for a special occasion, they won't disappoint.
