The stars of Divergent as well as The Fault in Our Stars, Shailene Woodley, have appeared publicly as a person who eats clay. The 22-year-old, a former pupil of Gwyneth Paltrow and a collector of water from the fresh rivers of the mountains, told David Letterman how she consumes clay in a detoxifying diet. "Clay binds to other materials in your body and helps your body excrete those materials that aren't necessarily the best for you," she claims.

In an interview for the blog Into The Gloss, she went into more detail: "My friend started eating it and the next day she called me and said: 'Dude, my shit smells like metal!' She was really worried, but we did some research together and everything said that when you first start eating clay your bowel movements, pees, and even you, yourself, will smell like metal."

Woodley also seems to be following the notion that some kind of clay may lead to expelling waste from the blood due to its unique opposite electrical charge. Can you believe any of that, however?

In comparison, the guy behind a "living clay" food product–a green swelling mass taken from the California desert, Paul Mackey, creator of Natures Cleansing Clay, claims "the benefits of clay's 'full-body detoxification' are nothing short of amazing. It builds one's immune system, balances PH levels and allows the body to naturally heal itself and fight off future disease." Mackey says it is used along with water.

Some experts also claim that it is not necessarily good to get rid of metals in your body, so be careful before you start eating clay.
